Echo & Execute is a 2D Action-RPG single player game set in a medieval fantasy world!

Set around the theme: Nothing can go wrong...

It follows the female protagonist named Echo as she completes a heist to steal a red gemstone. However, Echo is scared of fighting, so she uses magic to freeze time and plan her moves. She is helped on her journey by a funny old wizard, who acts as her "guy in the chair". He monitors over her with his magic eye familiar and uses his crystal ball to help her find information on orboogle. The mission was going to be easy, but everything goes wrong!

Creation Process

Story

The team started with the theme of "Nothing can go wrong..." so we decided to do a mechanic where the player would have a pre-determined path and would follow it. We had many ideas like making a little level editor where you have to make sure the character makes it to the end while having to set up a security system for a bank heist.


I thought it would be cool to take the idea of a heist and place it in a fantasy world. There would be a guy in the chair but it's a wizard that uses a magic eye like a camera and a crystal ball like a computer. So we went with that idea, and everything else followed.


Gameplay

The core gameplay centered around the main character able to act out moves in advance and play them back. We thought this planning ahead mechanic played well into the theme of "Nothing can go wrong... " as the player would often plan a short route of attack and how that nothing went wrong while the plan was executing. This would work by having the enemies freeze while in planning phase and when the player would execute the plan, the enemies would path-find and attack as normal.
